Shelby Herrera es originarie orgullosamente del Valle del Río Grande en Texas. En 2017, obtuvo una licenciatura en Psicología con especialidades secundarias en Sociología y Neurociencia de Texas A&M University–College Station. Durante su tiempo como estudiante, Shelby estuvo profundamente involucrade en esfuerzos de organización, abogando por espacios para personas Latinx, defensa contra deportaciones e iniciativas antirracistas.
Después de graduarse en diciembre de 2017, Shelby se convirtió en Directore Asistente en Grassroots Campaigns, liderando esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos para organizaciones como SPLC, Planned Parenthood y ACLU. Durante su tiempo en AFL-CIO, Shelby ayudó a organizar la campaña Labor 2018. Tras la temporada política, Shelby regresó a sus raíces en la defensa de los derechos de inmigrantes, organizando campañas contra el muro fronterizo en su ciudad natal de Hidalgo, TX. Más adelante, se convirtió en la primer organizadore de OPEIU Local 277, aportando su experiencia y una perspectiva arraigada en la comunidad al movimiento laboral.
A lo largo de su trayectoria como organizadore, Shelby fue testigue de primera mano del impacto que el activismo sostenido y el trauma generacional pueden tener en las personas y las comunidades. Al reconocer la profunda necesidad de cuidado en salud mental dentro de los espacios de organización, decidió comprometerse con el camino de convertirse en consejere—dedicándose a la sanación colectiva y la liberación.
Los intereses terapéuticos de Shelby se centran en el trauma generacional, incluyendo el trauma racial, el trauma migratorio, la violencia sistémica, la asimilación cultural internalizada y la violencia doméstica. Su objetivo es integrar los valores del trabajo comunitario en su práctica de consejería, basada en la creencia de que toda vida humana tiene valor y que la sanación ocurre en comunidad. Actualmente, Shelby está finalizando su Maestría en Ciencias en Consejería de Salud Mental Clínica, con una graduación prevista para julio de 2025. Shelby es pasante de consejería de maestría bajo la supervisión de Lori Martin, MS, LPC-S.
Shelby Herrera is proudly from the Texas Rio Grande Valley. In 2017, they earned a degree in Psychology with minors in Sociology and Neuroscience from Texas A&M University–College Station. During their time as a student, Shelby was deeply engaged in organizing efforts—advocating for Latinx spaces, deportation defense, and anti-racist initiatives.
After graduating in December 2017, Shelby became an Assistant Director at Grassroots Campaigns, leading fundraising efforts for organizations such as the SPLC, Planned Parenthood, and ACLU. During their time at AFL-CIO, Shelby helped organize the Labor 2018 campaign. After the political season, Shelby returned to their roots in immigration advocacy, organizing anti-border wall campaigns in their hometown of Hidalgo, TX. They later became the first organizer for OPEIU Local 277, bringing their experience and community-rooted perspective to the labor movement.
Throughout their organizing journey, Shelby witnessed firsthand the toll that sustained activism and generational trauma can take on individuals and communities. Recognizing the deep need for mental health care in organizing spaces, they committed to the path of becoming a counselor—dedicating themselves to collective healing and liberation.
Shelby’s therapeutic interests center around generational trauma, including racial trauma, immigration trauma, systemic violence, internalized cultural assimilation, and domestic violence. They aim to integrate the values of community organizing into their counseling practice—grounded in the belief that all human life is valuable, and that healing happens in community. Currently, Shelby is finishing up their Master's of Science for Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an expected graduation of July 2025. Shelby is a Master's Counseling Intern under supervision of Lori Martin, MS, LPC-S.
